Moving More

Okay…so I’m on my 16th day in South Korea.  I’ve been in my new home for one whole week, and I’m still finding my rhythm.  It’s been busy as I get settled in, so I haven’t established a routine yet.  As a result, my exercise has slipped a bit.  I’ve only done a formal workout twice while I’ve been here.  The good news is I’ve done a fair amount of walking, and my clothes haven’t gotten tighter. : )

I do know that exercise is an important part of weight maintenance, though, so I need to be intentional about getting it in.  Walking is good, but I’d also like to find something that works my whole body.  And, as we all know, it’s better to find something you enjoy so that you stick with it.  So I have a few options that I’m throwing around.  I’ll see how they fit with my schedule:

  • I’m looking into Taekwondo lessons (going to check out my first one on Monday).
  • I found another teacher (Canadian) who’d like to get into running, and there is a great cushioned running walking/running track nearby that goes along a river.
  • Volleyball is apparently popular over here.  I used to play all the time, so I’d love to get on my school’s team (many teachers at schools form clubs and play a few days after work).
  • I still need to check out the hiking trails in the area…there are so many mountains around (more like big hills).

What about you?  What’s an exercise you really enjoy?  Have you tried anything new?  Have you thought about trying something new but haven’t done it yet?

Moving More

I have to move more
I have to get up
Find the motivation
To get off my butt

To keep on track
Maybe a friend
Someone I trust
On whom I depend

A schedule that fits
Something that works
Just do more than sit
Like walking to work.

When I’m off track
And down goes the energy
Gotta find something new
And get back the synergy.

Nothing too fancy
It’s easy to do
And then come results

Down a pound or two!

Your motivation is wonderful. You are in a new country with new routines and spaces. Yet you are finding ways to keep constants in your life. I admire it. Sometimes we are in the same place with the same routines and we have difficult times keeping those constants.

This week was rough for me! My stress levels were amazingly high. I'm not an anxious/ anxiety ridden person and yet I found myself leaving work with a ball in the pit of my stomach. One day I would have had time to get my children from school and found that I needed to get the stress out. I had made many bad food choices that day to try to "help" and realized that it wasn't good or worth it. I ended up taking the dog for a long long walk with short sprints in it.

The next day, the stress came back with a vengeance! So that afternoon I left work on the early side and got to the gym 35 min early. I used my early time to bike, and do a few other exercises before my body combat class. Not only did my body feel great, my mind was clear.

Thursday rolled around and again the stress was creeping up on me. I saw a friend post a difficult WOD (Workout of the day) and replicated it at the gym. Again stress gone!

Friday- I had the whole family for dinner (all 21 of us). I served a very healthy "power" meal. I was relieved that the stress of the week had passed and I enjoyed the noise from 6 kids (4 were 4-5 years old), the chatter of adults, and all out family time.

I felt the need to share because I felt that it was a major celebration for myself. Realizing on day 1 that my stress could be more powerful as a tool for working out rather than eating. I put my activity into action.

Although the numbers increased this week, I know I did a great job managing my stress and dealt with it in a healthy way. :)
